The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum 2009 Events

We are celebrating women with our series, Not Frail Flowers. Learn about women nurses, pirates, business women and more. Our partners for the series are La Vieille Maison des Livres (The Old House of Books), Sew Ladylike and the National Historic Theater. Events that are part of the series are marked with an asterisk (*)

** Unless otherwise noted, the events are held at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.  Please call the museum at 570-966-1355 to confirm that the event you wish to attend is still scheduled, cancellations do occur. 

APRIL


Season Opening 

April 2 -  The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum complex opens for the season.  Hours of operation are Thursday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Last tour begins no later than 4:00 p.m.  Admission is charged.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum

First Thursday Bingo

April 2 -  Pay as you play bingo with cash prizes, special good neighbor gifts and refreshments, doors open at 6:15 with games played until 9:00.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum

*Ahoy Yea Mateys! 

April 4 -  Learn how and why women became pirates and enjoy pirate refreshments. 
Free and open to the public, 2:00 p.m.  La Vieille Maison des Livres.

*Eliza Shirley and the Hallelujah Lasses

April 25 -   Discover who they were and their importance to the Salvation Army. 
Free and open to the public, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. La Vieille Maison des Livres

*Women of Union Count

April 26 -    Learn about the women who shaped the county.  Walk begins at 5:00 p.m. Cost is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children.  La Vieille Maison des Livres

MAY


*Edwardian Era Elegance

May 1 to August 31 -   Celebrate the elegance and grace of lady’s fashions during the turn of the 20th century. Highlights include the Gibson Girl, gowns worn on the Titanic and the classic Garden Party Dress. 
Free and open to the public, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Sew Ladylike

*Nurse’s Month

May 2 -  Join Brenda Fluharty at La Vieille Maison des Livres in a celebration of National Nurse’s month as she discusses the role of nurses in the 19th century, especially during the American Civil War.  Ms. Fluharty has quite a collection of articles used during the war and will be displaying them at the book shop.  Ms. Fluharty is a registered nurse at Evangelical Hospital and a Civil War reenactor. 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., free and open to the public.  La Vieille Maison

*Miss Chase, Mr. Lincoln

May 6 – June 1 -  A National Historic Theater production of a new musical about the Lincoln presidency celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial.   Matinee performances will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum Sheary Gallery.  The production is part of a full day of touring historic Mifflinburg.  Tickets are $41.00 per person for the full day including lunch.  Advance reservations are required.  National Historic Theater

Buggy Days

May 16 – 17 -  In honor of International Musuem Day, spend the day exploring history at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.  The buildings will be open for open house tours, demonstrators will be showing off their time honored crafts, buggy rides will be offered through the town.  Saturday, 10 – 5, Sunday, 1 – 5.  No admission, donations accepted.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum

History of Mifflinburg

May 24 -  Walk through the history of Mifflinburg from the Great Runaway to enjoying electricity. Walk begins at 5:00 p.m. Cost is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children.  La Vieille Maison des Livres

JUNE


Battle of Chamber’s Ridge -  (click here for event schedule)

June 5 – 7  Civil War Encampment and Reenactment at the VFW Fairgrounds.  Experience the Civil War through an encampment of Union and Confederate soldiers, mock battles, drills and a court martial.  Learn how the war affected men, women and children through daytime and candlelight tours.  Enjoy a dance on Saturday evening and share in the church service on Sunday morning.  Saturday, 10 – 10, Sunday 10 – 3.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum and La Vieille Maison

Civil War Soldiers

June 14 -  Join local author Michael Sanders on a walk through Mifflinburg’s cemetery to learn about Union County’s sacrifice to the American Civil War.  Walk begins at 5:00. Cost is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children.  La Vieille Maison des Livres

*National History Day

June 18 – August 30   Students competing in National History day are invited to display their exhibit entries celebrating the Individual Woman in History.  Display will be open regular Museum hours.  Admission fee is charged for the Museum, students and families displaying exhibit will receive free admission.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum

*Bus Trip to Gettysburg

June 24 - Follow in the footsteps of women in the Civil War with a tour of the battlefield and tour the Eisenhower Farm. Cost includes lunch at General Pickett's Buffet, admission to the Eisenhower Farm, Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center and bus transportation.  There will also be some free time to explore downtown Gettysburg. Two departure points, cost is $55.00 for Museum members, $60.00 for non members.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.

Garden Tour.

June 28 -   Annual tour of private and public gardens around Mifflinburg.  Hosted by the Mifflinburg Garden Club to benefit the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum.  Tickets are $10.00 each.  Tour runs from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Bingo in the Park

July 4 -   Part of the town July 4th Celebration.  For more information about the celebration which includes a 5 K run, a pet parade, chicken barbeque, games, concert and fireworks, please contact MHRA at 570-966-1666

*Meet the Author

July 18 -  Kelly Butterbaugh will meet and greet fans from 12:00 to 2:00.  Free and open to the public.  La Vieille Maison des Livres

Buggies, Buggies and More Buggies

July 26 - Take a buggy ride to learn about the various buggy makers in Mifflinburg, once known as “Buggy Town”.  Tour begins at 5:00 p.m. (NOTE COST DIFFERENCE).  Reservations required for this tour, adults are $10.00, children $5.00.  La Vieille Maison des Livres

*First Ladies of Fashion

September 1 – December 31 -   An exhibit of carefully selected First Ladies most famous gowns and outfits including Mamie Eisenhower’s pink inauguration gown and Jacqueline Kennedy’s Chanel suit and pillbox hat.  Free and open to the public, store hours.  Sew Ladylike.
