The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum is celebrating
its 30th anniversary in 2008

We are offering a series of events celebrating transportation - entitled "Come Travelin'".  Our partners for the series are listed with each event, please call each business to confirm the dates and details of the events being offered.

APRIL

 

Season Opening 

Thursday, April 3.  The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum historic buildings will open for the season.  The museum complex (Snyder Visitor Center, Heiss House, Carriage House, William A. Heiss Coach Works and Repository) are open Thursday to Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. until October.  Admission is charged.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, 598 Green Street, Mifflinburg. 570-966-1355

Fashion Through The Ages

Walking Tour. 

Sunday, April 20, 3:00 p.m.  Bronwen Sanders, Executive Director of the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum will lead walkers through the history of Mifflinburg from the Great Runaway to enjoying electricity. Tea with Our Dolls

Sunday, April 27, 2:30 p.m.  Grandmothers, mothers, aunts and daughters, bring your doll to tea at the Visitor Center to enjoy tea and refreshments and a program about dolls.  Adults: $3.00, Children under 12 $2.00.  Reservations must be made before April 23.  Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, 598 Green Street, Mifflinburg. 570-966-1355.

Steam Engines and How They Built the Commonwealth

Saturday, April 19, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Richard Koontz, owner of Ye Olde Huff ‘n Puff in Pennsylvania Furnace will discuss steam engines and their impact on travel and commerce in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Koontz will also be presenting a temporary exhibit at the store.  Come and enjoy the trains and commentary from a train enthusiast.  La Vieille Maison des Livres, 344 Chestnut Street, Mifflinburg, 570-966-5052.

The National Road

Opening Day

Bus Trip

Wednesday, May 28, 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.  Travel to Baltimore, Maryland for a visit to the B & O Railroad Museum, lunch catered by the Hard Rock Cafe on a narrated Inner Harbor Cruise, a self-guided tour of the Baltimore National Aquarium which will include a dolphin show and free time to explore the Inner Harbor.  Reservations required by April 24, Buggy Museum members $115.00; non members $120.00.

Extended hours 

Sunday, June 1.  Millersburg Ferry extends its operating hours to Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to dusk on weekends until Labor Day (September1).  Fess charged. Buggy Days:  A Living History Festival 

Friday – Sunday, June 6 – 8. Friday, June 6th is Education Day with seminars, workshops and special presentations.  Herr Memorial Library will be hosting a Commonwealth Speakers. 

Saturday, June 7th the festival will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with evening activities.  In historic downtown Mifflinburg, enjoy demonstrations, crafts, antiques, food, buggy rides and walk through some of the historic buildings of the Buggy Museum and Preservation Mifflinburg, Inc. 

At the VFW Fairgrounds west of town, talk to living historians, experience a Civil War encampment and mock battles,  stroll through civilian camps, visit the descendant’s tent and author’s tent.  Join in the fun at the barbeque hosted by Green Ridge Market and dance with special guest artists, the 97th Regimental String Band on Saturday evening, stay for the night firing and ghost tours. 

On Sunday, June 8th, start the day with a Civil War church service led by the chaplain of the 150th Bucktails.  The service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the VFW, then spend time browsing at the craft stands, sutler’s tents and munching on great food.  The festival will continue in both locations until 4:00 p.m. 

No admission fee, no parking fee, donations accepted.  VFW Fairgrounds and Buggy Museum grounds.

Bus Trip 

Wednesday, September 3.  Experience transportation in Pennsylvania – we’ll be starting with the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, which cut travel time from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh from 23 days to 5 days. 

We’ll stop in Johnstown to experience the world’s steepest incline plane and enjoy lunch at the City View Bar & Grill. 

We’ll take guided tours of the Johnstown Flood Museum and Kentuck Knob, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Civil War Camp
